Edgar Crommarty

November 30, 1891 – November 25, 1964

Edgar

Edgar Crommarty Sr. was the fourth child of eleven born to Jayne and Ethel Crommarty. He was born in Gainesville, Florida on November 30, 1891. He grew up helping his family tend their farm. He attended public elementary school at an early age and was also home educated by his dad and mom. He attended church services with his family at his dad’s church on a regular basis. As he matured, he met and married Gertrude King. He continued his life in Gainesville until he decided to move north to Philadelphia. The following account is from our first cousin Gladys Jarrett:

Long before the term "Family Reunion" became popular, The Crommarty Brothers and Sons who had migrated from the South to Philadelphia (Edgar, MC, Roosevelt, James, and Junior) began the tradition of meeting together every Christmas morning starting at our (MC's) home, and ending up at Estella and Edgar's homes. Together they celebrated the holidays with "Big Fun". Uncle Ed was the "Life of the Party" and the big leader as he was in life at all times with family and friends. Also, he was kind, generous, and always helpful. Few people knew he had a great love for gardening, and took great pride in growing the largest sunflowers in the area. Also he loved driving and owned the largest "Pierced Arrow" (bright yellow) car in town! He was our favorite Uncle and we all loved him!!

In Philadelphia, following his service with the U.S. Coast Guard, he was employed as a truck driver, maintenance worker and bartender. He later met and married Georgianna Briley. “Ed” as he was affectionately known, was a Charter Member of the Villagers Club and was an active officer. Ed was also a 32° Mason in the Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge of which he was very proud. He continued working as a maintenance man and bartender until his retirement. Edgar went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 25, 1964.
